Over the last two decades, the Biosphäre Potsdam became one of the most known landmarks of Potsdam. The building was created on a former military training ground in order to be used during the Federal Horticultural Show in 2001. After further construction in the following years, the building was repurposed and became the tropical garden, designed as a world to experience nature. It became a demonstrative and educational facility, with the guiding principle to “experience the tropics in many ways”. As such, the Biosphäre Potsdam is heavily influenced by and sensitises visitors towards environmental sustainability and protection. The sustainability path is one example of the latter. It is part of the permanent exhibition and encourages visitors to a more sustainable lifestyle by offering vast amounts of interesting information on the implementation and highlighting their benefits. The Biosphäre Potsdam itself is committed to follow six of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2015. They focus on quality education, affordable and clean energy, responsible consumption and production, climate action, life below water and life on land.
